Blue Jasmine
Blue Jasmine
by Kashmira Sheth
2004
Seema Trivedi moves with her family from her home in India, halfway around the world to Iowa City, Iowa. In doing so, she's forced to leave behind her cousin and best friend, Raju. In addition to leaving behind her extended family and friends, Seema also leaves behind the only life she's ever known. She has a lot to adjust to in Iowa including the language, the weather, and the culture. Being immersed in her new life, Seema quickly begins to learn English and make new friends. She also finds that the person she thought she wouldn't miss at all from India, is the one she thinks about most often. When Carrie moves into town, Seema begins to see some things a bit differently and reevaluates some of her relationships.
This is a beautiful story that gives the reader an in-depth look into the life of 12-year old Seema. Sheth's own experiences help her to paint a clear picture of the struggles Seema goes through, and how she successfully manages to plant roots in both America and India, and begins to develop more of an understanding of what "home" really means.
